It's official:
The R & D Project is now available at CDBaby!  Click on the Music link above for more details.

Thanks to everyone for their support over the last few years as Don and I have worked to get this project completed.  We wish everyone would've been able to get over to Anthony's yesterday for our CD Release Celebration.  We had fun, had some beers, and even played a brief acoustic set (with special guest guitarist Todd Robinson)

For those of you in the South Bay, I will be hanging out at Suzy's in Hermosa (Aviation and Prospect) on the occasional Tuesday evenings to participate in their Open Mike night.  I debuted there a few weeks ago and had a good time, and will definitely be there this Tuesday (1/25) to promote the release of the CD.  Come by if you can - I'll even buy you a beer!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Here is the "official" press release for the CD:

“The R & D Project” to be released by Gnashville Sounds Records

South Bay songwriters record debut album

Manhattan Beach, CA – 30 December 2004

Gnashville Sounds Records is pleased to announce the release of The R & D Project, the debut release from Manhattan Beach-based songwriters Robert Thomas Kuhlmann and Don Jung.  The album features 10 original songs co-written by the lyricist/songwriter duo, and performed by Kuhlmann with a host of guest musicians.  Kuhlmann and Jung produced the album, along with producer/engineer Chris Hastings.

Kuhlmann and Jung have collaborated on dozens of songs since meeting at a South Bay songwriter’s workshop several years ago, and The R & D Project showcases the varied influences of their partnership.  From up-tempo guitar driven rock and roll to country-tinged ballads, to folk-blues, the album is a reflection of the pair’s musical styles and interests.

Both writers share a passion for well-crafted pop songs with a romantic edge, and the CD features a song cycle that resonates with emotion as it traces the timeline of love:  from the intoxicating first glance of I Have to Have You, to the questions raised in Will You Still Change With Me; and eventually, the finality of separation in Goodbye, Lover.

The R & D Project is a departure from songwriter/performer Robert Thomas Kuhlmann’s previous solo acoustic release, Confidential Reasons.   Upon its release, the Village View wrote, "Terrific, pop-inflected songs about love, loss and strength.  Come hear why he's a voice to listen for in the L.A. acoustic scene."   Kuhlmann is a balladeer whose charm comes across in the simple imagery of his songs.  Over the years, he has won over audiences through his live performances, and has proven that he is as much at home performing solo on a barren Austin, TX, stage at SXSW, as he is backed by a full band playing club dates with his rock band, the Last American Heroes.

Don Jung has co-written three songs released as singles by alternative artists and is a former
staff songwriter for a music publishing company.

The CD will be available on January 25th, 2005.

Spring is here, but it feels more like summer here in L.A.!

News:

Don and I got a preview of the final mixes from Chris Hastings tonight! He did an excellent job of mastering these tracks and we can't wait to get this to press. Groovin' On himself Dirk Wyse has finished up the cover design, and it looks awesome. We are putting it all together soon and once my cohorts at Gnashville Sounds Records set the official release date we will let you know.

Faith's Coffee House and Silent Auction was March 27th and the band had a lot of fun playing all night long. The M & M's (Malia and Mina) joined me on "Break My Heart" and I debuted "Quiet Time", both from the new CD.

I will be performing an acoustic set at this year's Matsuri of Faith, Faith UMC's annual spring festival. The event runs from 10am until 4pm and features delicious food, door prizes, games, and of course - a wide variety of spectacular entertainment. Plan to come early and stay awhile - and bring the kids!

The 20th anniversary of Page 3 came and went last spring without the planned CD release but we still intend to make those tunes available...either via digital distribution or on a "semi-authorized" bootleg. There are many other recordings hiding in the archives that we need to dust off, so stay tuned.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Don't miss Faith's annual Coffee House and Silent Auction on March 27th. The evening will feature a wide variety of performers and bands (including yours truly performing two songs from the new CD) in a unique, informal setting.

Going Digital - Digital Gone!!!

Within the next few weeks, Confidential Reasons will be available via the numerous legitimate digital music outlets like Rhapsody, BuyMusic, Emusic, the new Napster, AOL's MusicNet, MusicMatch, and more. If you are a member of one of those services, I would appreciate if you would drop me an email if you see it.
However, MP3.com will soon be shutting down soon so be sure to download anything you want off my MP3.com page: www.mp3.com/robertthomas. I think they will be erasing the servers in early December, so you have a few weeks. The tracks from Confidential Reasons are listen-only, but you can buy the CD (complete with original packaging) from CD Baby for a whopping 10 bucks! Here's the link: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/kuhlmann . If you have never checked out CD Baby, do it! These guys are the epitome of the cool record store and they are legit. No hassles, no worries, and thousands of groovy indie releases.

Gnashville Sounds:

Speaking of CD Baby, be sure to check out the new CD from my labelmates/pals Gutter Swans. It is called Foolishness Meets Vision and is chock full of cool, groovy tunes - and includes one of my favorite Shaun songs called No Magnolia. You can preview all of the tunes at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/gutterswans

Hello everyone…spring is around the corner and all sorts of new things are blooming!!

Things like a new website!

I still need to move a few things around, but the basic site is up and running.

Things like a new record label!

I'm really excited to announce that I have joined the Gnashville Sounds Records family. My label-mates include two long-time pals: Shaun Mason and Stace England. I've known these guys since the old Page Three days back home in St. Louis. We've shared many beers and stages between St. Louis, Carbondale and LA! Stace's CD Lovey Dovey ALL The Time was released on Valentine's Day and is getting great reviews and airplay. Foolishness Meets Vision is the soon-to-be-released CD by Shaun's band Gutter Swans.
You can purchase Gnashville Sounds Records CDs at fine online retailers like Amazon and CDStreet!

Things like a Devotion Band gig!

The Devotion Band will be appearing at St. Joseph High School on Saturday March 29th as part of their annual carnival. We will be performing over 3 hours of pop, jazz and classic rock starting around 7:30 PM. Come on down to Lakewood and enjoy some fine tunes, carnival rides, and cotton candy!!!! St. Joseph High School is located at 5825 N. Woodruff Ave. in Lakewood near the intersection of South Street and Bellflower Blvd. For detailed directions, check Yahoo Maps or email me for a map.

Welcome to RTKmusic.com!

I am really excited about our brand new website. We're just getting moved into the new online digs, so everything might not be unpacked yet. But go ahead. Relax!! Take your shoes off, have a look around! Check out the photos, check out the guestbook, and check out the music. Major kudos to Ken West from Powerpop.org for getting this thing up and running! Guess I should do a power pop CD next, huh? Oh, Robbie…where are you??

January 29, 2003
Back into the studio tonight for some more vocals. For those keeping score at home, that means we now have 7 songs ready to be mixed, and at least 3 more waiting in the wings for us to go record basic tracks. Those sessions will probably start in late April.

November 16, 2002
Some of you know I've been playing guitar with Faith United Methodist Church's Devotion Band for several months. Well, we will be the "pit band" for Faith's annual Coffee House and Silent Auction on November 23rd. The evening will feature a wide variety of performers and bands (including yours truly debuting two brand new songs) in a unique, informal setting.

Don Jung and I continue to make progress on our collaborative CD. Our target release date for The R & D Project is now early 2003. Before heading out on the road with Luis Miguel, Manhattan Beach guitar hero Todd Robinson added some killer guitar tracks to three tunes. His lead playing is now featured on every song.

I recently recorded an acoustic version of Last Night. You can download it (and most everything else in the catalogue) from my MP3.com page. FYI, this will not be on The R & D Project CD.

2003 will mark the 20th anniversary of the very first Page Three shows. We are planning to remix and digitally remaster the songs originally released on limited-edition cassette and make them available on CD (maybe with the Dear John tracks!) sometime next year.

September 12, 2002

Hope everyone had a great summer!

I'll be kicking off Fall 2002 with the first Los Angeles live appearance in over 3 years: An acoustic set at "CLUB BOB" on September 16th, starting at 9:00. Club Bob is hosted by everybody's favorite Bob, pop fanatic and musical virtuoso Robbie Rist every Monday at The Cat Club. Hope to see ya there!

The recording of the next CD - now officially designated The R and D Project - is progressing a bit slower than anticipated but we are having fun in the recording studio. You can check out the acoustic demo version of "Last Night" on the MP3.com website.

July 17, 2002
We're getting there! Last night we worked on basic tracks for three tunes:
And I Did Not Know That I Loved You
Break My Heart
King Of Fools

That puts 5 or 6 songs in the "in progress" stage. Also, Gregg Baker and Doug Sparks stopped by the studio to visit.

July 12, 2002

I've returned to the studio! Besides recording a batch of new originals and a few collaborations, I will be singing vocals on several of Don Jung's tunes. Also in the planning stages is the remixing and remastering of the original Page 3 material for a planned 20th anniversary release next year.

There are no live dates on the calendar yet, but that could change any day now. Keep checking back here.

July 24, 2001

George Schneller (aka John Doran) and I reunited with our former band mates Tim Berry (Last American Heroes) and Randy Erickson (Page 3) to perform several sets at the Mustard Seed on June 28th, 2001.

It was a great time and many longtime fans and friends showed up to enjoy the first St. Louis appearance in too many years. Page 3's favorite rock (now film) critic Joe Williams even got into the act, belting out an encore of "Boys Don't Cry"! Check out the pics on the Photos link. Thanks to Richard and Debbie Dempsey (and Richard's band The Unexpected) for making it all possible.
